With the high physical demand (and time-wise) of taking care of a newborn, it was almost impossible to think about taking an infant out for leisure purposes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic — until just recently, we decided to brave the anxiety and bring bebe on his first leisure outing at Hortus café in the Flower Dome at the Gardens by the Bay.

We picked a weekday afternoon to avoid the crowd. And we were so pleased to arrive at this gorgeous Mediterranean-themed café inside the Flower Dome away from the hustle and bustle, in style — their exclusive and complimentary buggy ride from the entrance of the Gardens by the Bay made arrival a breeze! While I was worried that it might be too windy for my newborn, bebe actually enjoyed the short and scenic ride.

Baby Friendly Cafe in Gardens By The Bay

The afternoon tea goes at S$58 per diner and comprises 10 pieces of sweet and savoury canapés and a Devonshire scone. There’s also a vegetarian option though the sweet segment remains the same. We had both the original afternoon tea and the vegetarian afternoon tea during our visit.

The Space

We love how bright, tranquil and airy the space is. As the café is nestled in the Flower Dome and surrounded by greenery, you get to enjoy the cool temperature with ample alfresco sunlight, which bebe K clearly enjoys. I’d say it is a great pick for your infant’s very first leisure outing, providing that you strategically plan the time of your outing. Bring along extra swaddle so that you can layer up your baby just in case it gets a little too chilly for the little one.

Afternoon Tea

The afternoon tea comes in a cute and dainty three-tier cake stand. The gorgeous set-up is an instant mood lifter. For a moment it almost felt like a fairy tale. The serving crew, Isyraf was warm and smiley as he serves our drinks and gave us a brief introduction of the canapés.

The Savouries

The savoury section includes sandwiches, quiche, pastries and puffs. The gougères and quiche were great but the sandwiches were a tad dry. However, I enjoyed the cucumber sandwich from the vegetarian menu. Perhaps, it was the cream cheese that provides the bread with some moisture that the other sandwiches were lacking.

Free Flow Beverages

The afternoon tea at Hortus comes with free-flow coffee and tea, although one beverage will be served at one time. You may also opt for free-flow Prosecco at S$98++ per pax if you are in the mood for some bubbles.

The Sweets

The sweet section comes with a variety of classic desserts, including macaron, lemon meringue, choux and tart. We love the Blueberry & Vanilla Frangipane Tart and the Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse on the top tier of the cake stand.

Complimentary Access to Flower Dome

One exclusive perk of dining here is that you’ll get complimentary access to the Flower Dome. Imagine an afternoon tea followed by a nice stroll around the Flower Dome…Sometimes we just need to stop and smell the roses!

Pro Tip: Arrange a visit to the café during your favourite season and theme exhibition and smell the scent of your favourite flower while having high tea in a cooling environment! We love the idea of enjoying an afternoon tea and spend a leisure evening at the Dome during the yearly cherry blossom exhibition.
Hortus Review Pheuron Tay

Writer’s Note: The afternoon tea in the tranquil garden of Hortus is akin to dining in a secret garden. We love the bright, cooling and beautiful space and the warm and attentive service. I was having a problem making a reservation but everything was settled swiftly.

However, I’d very much be a happy diner if the portions were a little more generous, and if the kitchen team can improve some of the items on their afternoon tea menu, especially the scone and sandwiches which are the basic and essential components of an afternoon tea.

Considering the price point, the canapés were mediocre. However, if we factor in the complimentary admission to the Flower Dome, the exclusive buggy service and the charming garden dining experience, I’d say it is of a fair value proposition. That said, I’ve heard good reviews of their Mediterranean food offerings and their ala-carte dessert near the counter looks rather promising too so I would return to try their main dishes someday.

The plan to eat at CUT was made rather impromptu and it was a real challenge to reserve a table by the last minute but thankfully we got lucky. I must say it was a pleasant night with the beautifully cooked steak, flavourful sides and impeccable service that I have expected it to be.

Bread Service

We were served baskets of assorted bread and complimentary cheese puffs that were all very delectable. Some were pillow-soft, and some were fragrant. It was certainly a carb-loading start to the night but no one was complaining.

Starters

While the steak at CUT is undoubtedly, highly praised by the general public, I must say that their starters are excellent too! All of us are pretty picky eaters but we couldn’t find a single fault with the starters we ordered. First, it was Mini Kobe Sliders in Brioche Bun and Sweet Pickles as the amuse-bouche.

It is evident that CUT went all out to impress its diners — Kobe beef sliders to start the meal?! We felt so spoilt. I liked that combination of beefy and juicy patties, with that soft, moist, and fluffy brioche bun. It was so tasty that if I weren’t there for their steak, I would have down another serving.

Next up was the Prawn “Cocktail”, Wasabi Panna Cotta, Celery Salt, Avocado Mousse, and Calamansi. Those plump deshelled prawns have a sweet mild taste with a crunchy texture — a refreshing dish to savour after the sliders.

I really liked the Maple Glazed Pork Belly. It was served with Apple-Apricot Compote, Chicharrón and Sesame – Orange Dressing. While we do find some Chinese influence in this dish, it was incredibly tender and succulent, the meat literally melt in my mouth and the bold flavours left me wanting more.

As with most steakhouse visits, a crab cake is always on the list. While I can’t enjoy the dish due to my shellfish allergy, the feedback from my dining companions was that this Maryland Blue Crab Cake was loaded generously with meaty chunks of fresh blue crab and was absolutely lovely!

Burrata Cheese with Tomatoes was the crowd-pleaser that can never go wrong. The salad was really refreshing. Those chilled tomatoes were sweet and juicy, perfect for the sweltering Singapore weather.

Mains

We had the USDA Prime New York Sirloin (350g) and American Wagyu Filet Mignon (170g) that night.

The USDA Prime is corn-fed, and dry-aged on-site for 28 days before being cooked to that medium-rare perfection, with that nicely charred surface that gave a crisp with every bite. The cut was very juicy and embodied a bold and beefy flavour that we like very much.

While we enjoyed the American Wagyu Filet Mignon from Snake River Farms, which was the restaurant’s signature cut, we actually prefer the USDA prime as it was more juicy and flavourful.

CUT serves their beef with a variety of sauces, but they’re so well seasoned (in fact, the chefs are very generous with the salt) that they go perfectly well without the condiments.

Sides

We had the Creamed Spinach, Peewee Potatoes and Sauteed Field Mushrooms as sides. The creamed spinach was smooth and creamy, just the way I like it. Potato lovers should not miss their Peewee Potatoes that came coated generously with that crispy shallots and cheddar cheese. The field mushroom was an interesting take as it tasted just like Kung Pao Mushrooms at a Chinese restaurant!

Dessert

We end the dinner with Honeycomb Espresso Cake, which includes honeycomb gelato, honey cake, sour cream, lemon curd and espresso. It was a nice combination of honey-sweet and lemony-sour and the dash of espresso added a perfect touch to the dessert.

Service

The service at CUT was warm and impeccable. Though the restaurant was busy during dinner hours, we were greeted by our names and the crew went above and beyond to make sure we had a good experience. Little snippets of conversation here and there throughout the night without making us feel interrupted just show how tactful their service crew are. It is definitely one of the better dining experiences we have in Singapore.

The restaurant is run by Italians from Piedmont, a region of Italy that sits at the foot of the Alps and bordering France and Switzerland. It’s known for sophisticated cuisine and great wines.

The name of the restaurant pays homage to its homeland, where typically, a family-run restaurant would have “no menu”. While the restaurant does have a menu (and a pretty extensive one!), you can always check with their staff regarding their exciting dishes of the day which is not listed on the menu.

We were seated on the second floor and the atmosphere was nice and cozy, with family photos and keepsakes adorned on the walls. As it was a simple lunch meeting, we skipped the Aperitivo. However, the meal was off to a great start with their warm and fluffy bread paired with EVOO and the special ‘Nduja’ — Italy’s buttery, spreadable salume that is made of fermented pork and fiery Calabrian chilies.

Antipasti

We had the Burrata Cheese with Sicilian Tomatoes & Parma Ham ($34 Half Burrata, $58 Whole Burrata) as appetizer. It was served at the perfect ambient temperature. It wasn’t too hard like some of the restaurants may serve it at. You’ll know it as you cut into that pearly white ball that oozes with the luscious cream. Fresh, creamy and decadent, this dish was the highlight of the meal!

Primi

For the pasta, I choose the Homemade Tagliatelle With Beef Bolognese Ragu ($34), a classic Bologna pasta dish made with ground beef. The dish was packed with flavours and I liked that the al-dente texture of my homemade, silken egg tagliatelle! Each bite transports me to the terracotta rooftops of Bologna which I absolutely adore.

My lunch companions ordered the Homemade Tagliolini with King Prawn in Olive Oil & Garlic Sauce ($36). The king prawns were chunky and fresh, and even though the ingredients were simple, the pasta was oozing with rich flavors from olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes! If you love aglio e olio pasta, this wouldn’t go wrong.

Dolci

As every great meals must end with a dessert, we ordered their Classic Tiramisu ($18) to share. The dessert was served in a bowl. Famed as the restaurant that serves one of the best tiramisu in Singapore, I had high expectation of this dish. It was creamy but light, with a tinge of fragrance from the espresso. Light, fluffy and not too sweet, the tiramisu was palatable, but definitely not the best in Singapore.

Writer’s Note: If you’re looking for a cosy restaurant that serves quality food, is conducive for conversation and with an extensive Italian wine list, No Menu would be an ideal choice. The dishes were delicious, and the staffs were friendly and accommodating. While the price are on the higher side, the charming ambience, warm service, fresh ingredients from Italy and an Italian chef made up a full, authentic Italian restaurant experience in Singapore.

Supernova: A Quaint Brunch Café at Tanjong Katong https://www.pheurontay.com/supernova-a-quaint-brunch-cafe-at-tanjong-katong/ https://www.pheurontay.com/supernova-a-quaint-brunch-cafe-at-tanjong-katong/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 06:00:35 +0000 https://www.pheurontay.com/?p=32110 Supernova is considered one of the newest kids on the block in Tanjong Katong. Since it is operated by the same group behind Atlas Coffeehouse and Columbus Coffee Co, and I’ve always admired their mid-century, antique-ish interior, I wanted very much to visit this café before I give birth and go into confinement. And I am happy I did!

Turns out that the café is quite popular even on a weekday afternoon. We didn’t have to wait for a seat but most of the tables were occupied during lunchtime.

The Food

The café provides brunch, coffee and cakes during the day, and when the night falls, it turns into a modern bar where you can enjoy a great selection of natural wines, cocktails and negronis while enjoying okonomiyaki, burgers, grilled meats and desserts.

I haven’t got the chance to visit the café at night, but I believe it would be nice to unwind and chill with your gang at the café during dinner time.

Morning Menu

The Morning menu is available from 8 am to 5 pm, where guests enjoy a variety of hearty breakfast selections. The Fried Chicken French Toasts ($24.5) is one of their popular dish with thick, fluffy Shokupan french toast, fried chicken, hot maple and a dollop of compound garlic butter.

I love the soft, buttery and fluffy Shokupan toast enveloped in a crispy caramelised layer. The fried chicken tender was crispy and the fragrant batter is made of a nice mix of herbs but I find that there were too much of chicken skins and the chunks aren’t meaty, which was slightly disappointing. The garlic butter and the maple syrup laced with chilli flakes were great though. These condiments serve alongside the dish give a nice spin on the American classic. If you love fried chicken (and especially fried chicken skin), you’d love the dish.

Supernova Fried Chicken French Toast

As their Shokupan french toast was delicious, I couldn’t help but ordered another french toast dish —Passionfruit French Toast ($20.9). This is a classic sweet breakfast combination of Shokupan french toast, passionfruit curd and blueberries.

I am usually not a big fan of tangy fruit curd, especially lemon curd as some places just do it so badly that a dish can taste like vomit. However, the passionfruit curd at Supernova had a nice balance of sweetness and tanginess and it pairs well with that airy soft, buttery and eggy french toast!

Afternoon Menu

The café serves its afternoon menu from 11 am onwards, where you can enjoy a good mix of pasta, burgers, and light bites like salad and grain bowls.

What stood out on the lunch menu was the Eggs in Meurette ($24) so we decided to give it a try. It was a piece of fried sourdough bread in a red wine stew of bacon, mushrooms and pickled shallots and you can choose to modify the eggs. While the original menu comes with two poached eggs, we changed it to scrambled eggs.

The dish tasted quite Christmas-y, perhaps due to the red wine stew. Overall, it was a nice stomach warmer perfect for the colder days.

Supernova Eggs in Meurette

Gorgonzola Portobello Rigatoni ($22.5) was a cream-based Rigatoni pasta dish with portobello, gorgonzola, and walnuts and served with a slice of lightly toasted baguette. While the dish was a tad too salty in my opinion, especially when we compared it with another pasta dish we ordered on the same day, it was nonetheless an enjoyable dish if you’d like a creamy and luscious cheese-based pasta.

Supernova Gorgonzola Portobello Rigatoni

I like the Bacon & Pumpkin Rigatoni ($21) which features a pumpkin cream-based rigatoni pasta, with bacon, Shimeiji mushroom and a slice of baguette bread. The rigatoni was al dente and the large tubes allow the pasta to coat up a nice amount of pumpkin cream sauce — the sauce was divine! It was a perfect balance of the sweetness from the pumpkin and the smokey, savoury flavour from the bacon & cream. I have since made a few subsequent visits to the café and this is the only dish that I have made repeated orders.

Supernova Bacon & Pumpkin Rigatoni

Sides

Another pleasant surprise was the Burnt Brussel Sprouts ($14.50) from the side menu. Every bite comes with a fragrant, caramelised crisp while still retaining that juicy, tender, satisfying (but not mushy) texture. One of the best Burnt Brussel Sprouts out there!

Sweets

There are different kinds of cakes and pies available at the café too! We tried the Sea Salt Caramel Carrot Cake ($8) and Key Lime Pie ($7).

Coffee

As the joint is managed by the same team behind Atlas Coffeehouse and Columbus Coffee, you can expect good quality coffee at Supernova. They offer 2 bean blends to choose from: Mr Cuddles and Mr Brightside. The former one is a bold, comforting and well-balanced taste profile, while the latter leans towards the acidic side.

I have ordered Flat White ($5.6) & Cappucino ($5.6) on different occasions with Mr Cuddles blend, and the coffee tastes great!

Supernova Cappucino

Supernova Flat White
Flat White

I was excited when I see Einspanner ($7.50) on their coffee menu. It is a Viennese coffee traditionally made of milk, whipped cream, espresso shots, and a sprinkle of cocoa powder. For some reason, they only serve their Einspanner hot.

I opted for the drink with Mr Cuddles as my chosen blend (which could be a mistake) as my Einspanner turns out to be somewhat too earthy, chocolatey, and overly balanced — the lack of acidity could be the reason why I didn’t enjoy the drink. The drink would have tasted so much better if it is served icy cold. It was a nice try from the team but unfortunately, I find that it pales in comparison with the ones in Korea, especially if you had tried the ones at Taylor Coffee in Seoul.

Supernova Einspanner
Einspanner

Writer’s Note: I like the airy interior, chilled vibe and attentive service at this café that serves delicious upscale brunch. While there are some hits and misses, most food items taste really good. This joint is also very popular during weekends so be prepared to sit outdoor if you’re visiting on a weekend or public holiday.

And of course, ending the article with photos of my Week 37 bump! I am having wardrobe crises nowadays as my belly and butt grow so big that I have since “graduated” from my regular pants and jumpsuits. My bust is prepping me to be a milk cow too so most of my pre-pregnancy dresses which I could fit in perfectly now feel uncomfortably tight at my chest area.

So I bought this new dress from Jajainthemoment on Taobao, and it fits just nice for now and hopefully, it’d last me through my 4th trimester.

Prego: Classic Italian Fare at Fairmont Singapore https://www.pheurontay.com/prego-classic-italian-fare-at-fairmont-singapore/ https://www.pheurontay.com/prego-classic-italian-fare-at-fairmont-singapore/#respond Sat, 20 Aug 2022 10:27:24 +0000 https://www.pheurontay.com/?p=28132 Prego has long been a prominent feature at Fairmont Singapore. It is also one of the restaurants in Singapore I’d be visiting whenever I crave authentic Italian food. The restaurant was tastefully renovated just before COVID happens, with beautiful mosaic tiles on the floor, and the iconic Prego car right near the entrance — The decorations are visually stunning and so very Italian.

And of course, for an authentic Italian experience in an Italian restaurant, we have to order Aperol Spritz ($18) as aperitivo!

Appetizer

For the appetizer, we ordered Burrata e Pomodorini in Insalata con Basilico ($32), it is a simple dish comprised of burrata cheese, cherry tomatoes, olives, and pistachios and basil oil. I love the combination, and the olives are divine. However, the texture of the burrata cheese wasn’t soft enough when we cut it open — it wasn’t the creamy, smooth and buttery consistency of a burrata, which was a disappointment. Well, I do believe I went on a bad day because I have ordered this dish in the past and it was perfect!

On the other hand, the focaccia bread served before the meal was warm, moist, subtly oily and flavourful.

Soup

I’ve always loved Prego’s mushroom soup. This Zuppa di Funghi cost $20 per bowl, but it is indeed soup for your soul. It has the right consistency — not too watery nor creamy, and is packed with the fragrant, earthy notes of mushrooms. It isn’t the most decent-priced mushroom soup on the market, but I’d gladly order another bowl if I hadn’t ordered other dishes that day.

Mushroom Soup Prego Fairmont Zuppa di Funghi
Zuppa di Funghi (Mushroom Soup)

Side Dish

I enjoyed the Carciofi alla Romana ($18), a classic Roman-style Fried Artichoke. These “Golden Sunflowers” have an addictive crunchiness, with tender and soft meat in the centre that is so deliciously nutty and addictive. I found myself popping them like potato chips before the mains arrived.

Carciofi alla Romana (Roman Style Fried Artichoke)

Pasta

Trust Prego when it comes to pasta. I still fondly remember their pappardelle in baby spinach sauce and shaved generously with Parmigiano cheese which I had years back. It was phenomenal. While the dish is no longer on the menu, pasta at Prego never fails to impress.

Spinach Pappardelle with Parmigiano cheese, Circa 2019. The restaurant is not serving the dish anymore.

I ordered Tortelli al Parmigiano Fondente ($34), a Parmesan Ravioli with Mushroom Sauce, sprinkled with almonds. Each small parcel is filled with luscious cheese fillings. As you bite into the al-dente pasta squares, the creamy cheese filling bursts out, leaving a flavourful, delightful, cheesy creamy mess.

Pizza

Margherita Pizza ($30) — a classic staple in any Italian restaurant with super simple ingredients: tomato, mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, and basil.

Prego’s pizza dough was slightly towards the fluffier side. So if you’re looking for crisp, light and airy dough, you may be slightly disappointed. That said, the ingredients are fresh, and they are super generous with the cheese and toppings. The restaurant is equipped with a proper wood-fired oven so there is a nice smoky flavour to your pizza!

The signature Prego Pizza ($40) topped with sundried tomatoes, ham, wild and brown button mushrooms, fresh cream and parmesan is another crowd pleaser at the restaurant too!

I can’t pick a favourite between the two, as the Margherita Pizza is tomato-based while Prego Pizza has a more cheesy taste profile, and both are equally appealing.

Prego Pizza

Main Course

The main course worth trying is their Pancetta di Maiale in Porchetta ($50). It is a mouth-watering slow-roasted pork belly, seasoned with salt, garlic, rosemary and assorted wild herbs. The crackling skin, succulent fats and perfectly seasoned and tender meat just hit the right balance. If you’re looking for that distinctively glorious melt-in-your-mouth fatty texture, capped by a satisfying crunchy crackling, this dish would satisfy your cravings.

Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Fennel Seed, Parsnip.

Digestif

For an authentic Italian experience, order a Limoncello Pallini ($18) as your digestif while waiting for your dessert to be prepared.

Prego Limoncello

Dessert

The restaurant offers a variety of gelato ice-creams. I have always ordered the pistachio flavour (one scoop $6, Biscotti add on $2). Overall I would say that the gelato at Prego is above the average café standard in Singapore, but it doesn’t satisfy my cravings for Italian gelato.

Pistachio Ice Cream Prego
Pistachio Ice Cream served with Biscotti

Writer’s Note: Prego is a restaurant with a warm, friendly and welcoming ambience, great for families and gatherings. I love their pasta, and I have always enjoyed their pasta offerings. The consistency for pizza and some other dishes can be floppy, probably exaggerated by how much I enjoyed their pasta. That said, Prego is a good restaurant to dine in, especially if you have credit card promotions or Accor Plus Membership that offer great discounts.

It is an African-themed restaurant in Singapore that serves a variety of cuisines from Liberia, Swahili, Kenya, Nigeria and etc. So when I met a foodie friend who’s also very adventurous with her palette, there comes the chance to check out the restaurant together.

The restaurant is nested in one of the traditional shophouses along Jiak Chuan Road. With brick-coloured walls, lush tropical greeneries and carved coffee tables decorating the iconic five-foot-way, the restaurant already sets the perfect mood for an African culinary safari.

The restaurant was packed with visitors on a weekday afternoon. Despite the busy crowd, their service remains warm and friendly. The staff actually served me iced water while I was waiting for a seat at their tropical-themed outdoor seating!

The indoor area exudes a modern cafe and bistro-like atmosphere. The staff appeared to understand their menu inside-out and is able to make recommendations based on our dining preferences and palette.

The Drinks

The restaurant offers a wide variety of cocktails, and they all look very, very interesting (and delectable too!) I wished I could try out their cocktail but since I am pregnant, I ordered their Mocha Bidibado “Abracadabra” (SGD 7), a mocha coffee rimmed with natural peanut butter, toasted almond & crushed pink peppercorns. I like this nutty, chocolatey milk coffee and that gentle peppery kick that lingers in my mouth after each sip. You should definitely give it a try if you love the combination of warm spices and smooth, chocolatey coffee.

My friend ordered the Hibiscus with Rosehip, Apple and Strawberry. The drink was refreshing and tasted very identical to a typical rosehip drink. It was a nice thirst quencher during a warm day but nothing especially remarkable.

The Food

While the restaurant serves African cuisines, you can also find Western brunch dishes with plenty of African influences on the menu.

We ordered Buttermilk Fried Chicken (SGD 18) as our starter. The chunky chicken thigh came piping hot and is battered with crispy buttermilk and spice mix. It is served together with 3 types of dipping sauce – Congo Bongo, Mango Chilli Marmalade and Housemade Chili Sauce. The chicken is crispy, tender and moist. But I was hoping that the spices on the batter can be stronger. The spicy level of the dipping sauce varies and some can be really spicy for those with a lower spice tolerance. This dish was enjoyable, I mean, it is indeed a piping hot, crispy battered chicken. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what I expected in an African-themed restaurant due to the lack of spices in the batter

We also ordered Maharagwe (SGD 28), an East African bean stew dish from the brunch menu. It is an interesting combination of spiced bean stew with coconut milk and smoked pork sausage.

The flavourful dish reminds me of Indian masala curry (there is paneer in the stew too!). It is very substantial, probably due to the large amount of beans in the dish – I think this dish is great for sharing. The dish also comes with chapati which you can soak up with the spicy stew and enjoy!

Another dish we tried was Liberian Peanut Chicken Stew (SGD 28) — I really like this dish. The stew is so packed with bold flavour. The Sakura chicken thigh was well marinated and succulent. While we didn’t really taste any strong peanut flavour from their natural peanut butter, this stew carries a nice hint of spices and is thick, creamy and rich. I love the distinct flavour of the spices and the fiery kick of habanero — great to pair with their fluffy Jasmine white rice!

Dessert

For dessert, we had Malindi Halwa — a Swahili mochi made of dragonfruits, nuts and spices. Halwa, or Halva(h) is a traditional Indian and Middle Eastern sweet dessert. It is a chewy, bouncy and gelatinous cube usually made of tapioca or corn starch.

Here at Kafe Utu, they serve their rendition of Halwa made of dragon fruit juice, hazelnuts, cashew nuts, macadamia, pistachio and Malindi spices. I love the sweet floral hint from the Halwa. It isn’t overly sweetened and matches really well with the light coconut yogurt. The dukkah filo pastries added a nice crisp to the dish too! Overall, it is a light and refreshing “mochi” dessert to complete the meal.

Writer’s Note:

I really like the atmosphere and warm service at this African-themed cafe. It was beautifully done up, and I loved that the waitress share about the food we enquire on the menu so warmly and bubbly. While some of the dishes aren’t what we had imagined them to be, they are all very yummy and enjoyable still. And I look forward to revisiting this place again when I can finally take my alcoholic drinks. There are also a few other dinner dishes which I really wanted to try out. If you love the vibrancy and rich taste profile from the spices and are looking for a place with a chilled and happy vibe, you’ll love this place!

It is PS. Café’s first foray into Asian cuisine, inspired by the fond memories of Chinese comfort food the owners had in western countries.

As with every PS. Café’s property, the restaurant features a classy, chic and elevated colonial-style interior. I love the dark wooden floors, rattan chairs, high ceilings with bright lights, and their signature, attention-grabbing flower arrangements!

The Food

The menu is a mix of Asian cuisine with a modern twist. There are Cantonese and Sze Chuan dishes, Singaporean-inspired dishes like Chili Crab, Mee Goreng, Rendang Beef, and of course, Anglo-Chinese dishes that are so familiar to those who spent some time overseas. You may find plenty of vegetarian options with an exciting blend of ingredients too.

Appetizer

We ordered the Dimsum Basket (9pc, $26) as our appetizer. It comes with a mixture of 9 fried, baked and steamed dim sums. While the colours are bold and vibrant, the shape of the dim sums looks messy — definitely not what I expect for a dim sum that cost $2.8++ each. Some of them tasted nice, just outrageously overpriced considering the execution.

Main

We really liked the Chef’s Beef Cheek Rendang ($38). The beef cheeks were braised in an aromatic and rich gravy until tender-soft and flavourful. Topped off with some finely chopped Kaffir lime leaves to create that zesty and refreshing notes, this dish would pair super well with a warm bowl of jasmine rice.

The Jade Fried Rice ($16) was another pleasant surprise. It is made of a few humble ingredients – jasmine rice, spinach, basil, mint and egg, but it was so fragrant and fluffy. Each and every bite is enveloped with the aromatic and smokey “wok hei“(the breath of the wok) that makes it really addictive!

We also ordered Chopsuey Chopsuey ($18), a wok-fried seasonal organic baby vegetables dish to compliment the meal. While it wasn’t the most exciting dish on the menu, I liked the garlicky flavour and the holy basil that added a nice fragrant to the dish. Plus, I get to fulfil my dose of leafy veggie quota too!

“촙수이 촙수이”는 유기농 야채 볶음이다. 눈에 띄는 메뉴는 아니지만 마늘 향과 홀리 바질의 독특한 향이 마음에 들었다.

Dessert

I enjoyed the Golden Banana Butterscotch Bundt ($15) at Chopsuey Café just like I have always enjoyed my sticky date pudding at PS. Café. It is a warm banana and chocolate chip cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, set in a generous pool of homemade butterscotch sauce. The cake is moist and soft and tasted divine with that velvety butterscotch sauce. A sinful indulgence!

PS.

Writer’s Note:

While pricing is on the high side, Chopsuey Café scores A’s for their service, ambience and (some of) their menu selections. Avoid their dim sum and you’d have a generally satisfying meal.

Anju: An Elegant Korean Restaurant & Bar in Singapore https://www.pheurontay.com/anju-an-elegant-korean-restaurant-bar-in-singapore-tanjong-pagar/ https://www.pheurontay.com/anju-an-elegant-korean-restaurant-bar-in-singapore-tanjong-pagar/#respond Thu, 26 May 2022 04:57:34 +0000 https://www.pheurontay.com/?p=29917 So I have been hearing good things about ANJU, a contemporary Korean restaurant at Tanjong Pagar from my Korean friends and community. Anju or 안주 is a Korean term that describes dishes consumed with alcohol. The restaurant focuses on modern Korean Anjus that is paired with its exquisite drinks, directly curated and sourced from South Korea.

As with most popular restaurants in Singapore, the waiting list to dine at ANJU was long. It is really difficult to get a table during normal dining hours (ie, weekdays after working hours, or weekend meal time). So I waited for a few months before finally visiting this sophisticated space that serves contemporary Korean cuisine.

It was a weekday at 6 pm. And the establishment was already packed with diners.

ANJU’s stylish and modern interior. Photo courtesy of ANJU.

I love the interior with a soft and muted colour palette that emphasised clean lines and natural lights. The bronzeware created that chic and luxury atmosphere almost instantly.

We ordered a bottle of Champagne Makgeolli 이화백주 (940ml, $80), a naturally carbonated Makgeolli for the night. It features a fizzy champagne mouthfeel, with a sweet and smooth profile and a tinge of sourness. A milky but refreshing aperitif to whet our appetite. It is also one of the Makgeolli that made it to the Blue House’s curated wine list and is served to its prestigious guests who are visiting the Blue House for dinners.

E-hwa Baek Ju — the Champagne Makgeolli.

Appetizers

At ANJU, expect communal dishes with 10/10 aesthetic plating efforts. You get to experience that Korean ritual of uniting with loved ones around the table of elevated and flavourful sharing dishes.

For appetizers, we ordered Bori Prawns 보리 새우 ($10), a deep-fried baby prawn dish seasoned in green garlic shoots and Korean chilli powder. It was an addictive pre-dinner snack that is great to pair with a chilled beer.

Domi 도미($26), a red snapper carpaccio garnished with ANJU’s house ginger dressing, Ssamjang, kombu, arugula leaves and endives. It was a refreshing cold appetizer perfect for the warmer days in Singapore.

Bori Prawns 보리 새우
Domi 도미

If there is one dish you should absolutely order from its hot dishes category, that would be Yangnyeom Cauliflower 양념 컬리플라워 ($22). It was a clever dish marrying the flavour of sinful Korean Yangnyeom fried chicken with healthy cauliflower. The crispiness and nuttiness from the multigrain crumb were a nice touch and I am sure all veggie-haters would enjoy this dish. I wasn’t expecting much from this dish but it is now on my must-order list at ANJU.

We also ordered the Ssambob 쌈밥 ($10) as tummy fillers for the night. Each barley rice roll was lovingly wrapped with savoy cabbage and garnished with ssamjang.

Ssambob 쌈밥 and Yangnyeom Cauliflower 양념 컬리플라워.
Hogam Jeon 호감전, Zucchini & Potato Pancake.

Makgeolli and Korean pancake “Jeon” 전 is a classic pairing in Korean cuisine. Hence we also ordered the Hogam Jeon 호감전 ($26), a pancake dish that is made of Hobak 호박 (zucchini) and Gamja 감자 (potato). We also opted to top the pancake with Mozzarella cheese (+ $3).

However, the dish didn’t turn out as I imagined. While I prefer my pancake to be soft and fluffy on the inside with a perfect crisp on the outside, just like the ones we had at the traditional markets in Korea, the Hogam Jeon was a tad dry and bland. The cheese didn’t do much in sustaining the moisture of the pancake either. That said, you can give the jeon a good dunk in the Korean soy sauce with pickled onion that is served together for a stronger flavour.

Well, I have to admit that I had high expectations of this dish, which probably explains my disappointment. But I don’t think that this is a bad dish, just not the way I like my jeons to be. If you love crispy Korean pancakes, then this would fit your appetite!

Main

The star dish of the night was Galbi Jjim 갈비찜 ($38 per pax, minimum order 2 pax). Each cube of the Korean short rib was perfectly braised to a soft, tender and flavourful bite. The soy sauce wasn’t overly sweet and has that fragrant umami that calls for a bowl of warm and fluffy Korean short-grained rice.

Galbi Jjim 갈비찜
Soft & Tender Galbi Jjim.

If you are familiar with Korean food culture, you may often come across the expression “Bap-doduk” 밥 도둑, literally translated as “rice thief”, which refers to dishes that boost one’s appetite and increase rice intake. The Galbi Jjim at ANJU is definitely a real Bap-doduk.

Dessert

We had the Black Sesame Bread 깨찰빵 ($16) as dessert. It is a unique combination of black sesame cream, doenjang ice cream, yuzu meringue and Korean black sesame bread. As I am no stranger to Korean doenjang and doenjang desserts, I find myself enjoying the ice cream and black sesame cream pairing. The Yuzu meringue provided a refreshing touch to the earthy element of this dish too!

Dessert: Black Sesame Bread 깨찰빵

Writer’s Note

The beautiful traditional flavours, outstanding modern execution of the dishes, and unique curation of South Korea’s finest booze are probably the reasons for ANJU’s popularity. While the atmosphere was pleasant, with the hustle and bustle of this popular establishment some guests may get a little loud. That said, I am still looking forward to going back and trying out other dishes at this elegant Korean restaurant.

To clarify, this is a long overdue post but so many things happened in the past 6 months and it was complete madness. I promise I will share more when I am ready 🙂 For now, let’s focus on my birthday lunch at Olivia Restaurant & Lounge at Keong Saik Road.

What I really love about this Catalan establishment is its vibrant interior. Food is plated with modern aesthetics, and it does feel like we were dining in an idyllic, charming coastal resort.

The Food

Like most modern Spanish restaurants in Singapore, the food here encompass the philosophy of communal dining and sharing a meal with loved ones. Other than the starters which are mini bites, the other food portions are generous. And I really love that homey flavours with fine-dining presentations.

The Spherical Olives ($1.5) were a fun dish to kick off the lunch. I popped one in my mouth and it exploded, letting out that briny, rich and delicious olive juice – I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves olive.

Ham Croquettes (2pc, $16) were made of Ibérico ham, enveloping the fragrant & melty cheese. It was slightly on the pricier side but overall a nice starter that makes u want to go back for more.

Next up was the Classic Tenderloin Steak Tartare with Avruga Caviar ($56). Finely chopped fatty beef steak topped with a thick bed of luscious caviar, and served with piping hot, thick-cut fries on the side! We also paired the crostini with the tartare and it was truly an enjoyable dish!

The highlight was Octopus ‘A Feira’ ($39). On top of that creamy mash was crispy pork belly, tender and flavourful octopus, with the fragrance of caramelised onion. It was so good that I would probably order one serving for myself on my next visit!

Dessert

For first-time visitors, please do not miss out on that classic Olivia’s Creamy Homemade Cheesecake ($15)! With the lightly burnt surface, each bite was loaded with a delightful sweetness, with a hint of saltiness and earthy flavour from their blue cheese. The texture was perfect – with that creaminess outside and almost liquid centre. It was sinfully indulgent and truly divine. Perfect for sharing!

Writer’s Note

I enjoyed my birthday lunch at Olivia. The octopus, crispy pork belly and potato foam was the star dish. Not forgetting the melty creamy homemade cheesecake to finish off the birthday meal. The service was warm and attentive but the pace felt a little rushed. Probably because it was a buzzy weekend and they needed the table asap. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience!

I have been here for brunch, press events and business lunches and had the privilege of celebrating a few special occasions here. The shimmering city skyline, impeccable service and excellent food were probably the reasons why this is one of the popular dining establishments in Singapore for birthdays and anniversaries.

We got a nice window seat that evening. It was a cloudy day in Singapore, so we couldn’t see the iconic sea view clearly even when we were on the 70th floor but the sky cleared off when the night falls and the lights and sparkles at Marina Bay were truly magical!

Bread Service

The bread basket consists of warm sourdough and SKAI’s signature mushroom butter. The luscious, fragrant and earthy butter was a great compliment to the freshly rolled bread! I would have stuffed myself with another serving of sourdough and this beautiful butter if we hadn’t ordered so many dishes for the night!

By the way, you can also get this butter at Fairmont At Home, the hotel’s very own curated premium grocery e-mall.

Small Plates

We ordered a few small plates as starters. Their Signature Crab Cake was the most popular dish among what we ordered that night. As I have a mild shellfish allergy, I only took a very small bite of the crabcake. I could taste the sweetness of the seafood from the cake. The crispiness from the fried dough skin and daikon, together with passion fruit and chilli added a nice and refreshing touch to the dish.

The beef comes with a perfect buttery texture and an aromatic char, I am sure you’ll find something you like here.
